Kodosan Bon Dance

The Kodosan Bon Dance is held to honor the sacred relics (busshari) of Shakyamuni Buddha and to pray for the repose of our ancestors’ spirits. In front of the illuminated Buddha Relics Tower, ceremonial lamps flicker solemnly. The temple grounds feature a stage erected in front of the Main Hall illuminated by bonbori and andon lanterns. Participants of all ages perform the traditional Bon dance here. Please come and enjoy this special Obon moment at Kodosan, overlooking the beautiful night view of Yokohama! August 15 & 16 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the center of the main compound at the top of the hill.

Grand Memorial Service for the Buddha’s Relics

The sacred remains of Shakyamuni Buddha, who taught the Dharma approximately 2,500 years ago, are called in Japanese busshari. On August 18, 1952, Kodosan welcomed these busshari from Enryaku-ji Temple on Mount Hiei, founded by the great master Saicho (Dengyo Daishi), who had brought them from China in the Tang era. Every year on August 18, a Grand Memorial Service is held, and the sacred relics are displayed to the public. Busshari Viewing: 12:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
