The Bodhisattva Path of Care: Compassion and Skillful Means in Buddhist-Informed Counseling

The Institute for Buddhist Counseling & Chaplaincy (IBCC), affiliated with the International Network of Engaged Buddhists (INEB), is happy to announce “The Bodhisattva Path of Care: Compassion and Skillful Means in Buddhist Counseling,” an online training & mentorship program for mental health counselors and other caregivers who support those experiencing distress and trauma.

The Bodhisattva Path of Care weekly training program integrates Buddhist psychological perspectives, systems-focused western counseling, the neurobiology of trauma & relational connection, and mindfulness practice into a therapeutic framework designed to support a variety of counselors and caregivers (social workers, therapists, mental health advocates, monastics, chaplains, educators, medical professionals, and nonprofit/community workers and volunteers).

Weekly meetings include psycho-educational presentations and experiential  exercises to train participants in:

  • relating with empathy and compassionate presence
  • an understanding of the neurobiology of trauma and relational repair
  • verbal and non-verbal attunement skills
  • a systems approach to assessment and case conceptualization
  • how to apply the Buddhist perspective of mind, feeling, embodiment and awareness in counseling
  • the critical distinction between self-stabilization and ego-building.
  • a variety of counseling skills and mindfulness exercises
  • experiential role play and case consultation sessions
  • a “train the trainer” module for internship opportunities
  • an evidence-based model of caregiver self-stewardship to prevent empathic distress and support sustainable caregiving by fostering equanimity and capacity for caregivers, and stabilization and resiliency for those they support and capacity for caregivers, and stabilization and resiliency for those they support

The 16-week online training and mentorship program will meet weekly via  Zoom on Monday evenings at 6:30-9:00 pm South Asia/ 8:00-10:30 Southeast Asia (excluding Malaysia/Singapore) from March to June 2025, and is  available to English-speaking counselors and caregivers based in South and  Southeast Asia.
